Letters carved by hand in Stone

Artistry and fine craftsmanship bring stone to life.

Personal Memorial Design

Most people know they want something special for their memorial or house plaque but don’t know how to give it form. A Memorial Artist can help translate your ideas and feelings into stone. Julie works closely with her clients and the design evolves from their conversations. They look at photos, tell stories and share memories. A sense of the desired tone, style and intention is gradually revealed. These qualities form the essence of the lettered stone and they determine the final design.

Careful  Craftsmanship

Julie Rezac practices the old craft of letter cutting. She first discovered her love of carved letters while visiting old cemeteries in Ireland. Every memorial was a lively original and had a story to tell. This was very different from the modern graveyards she’d seen in the United States. Julie later discovered that the letters on the old gravestones were cut by hand and not sandblasted like most modern stones. A careful craftsman – with an artist’s eye – had designed and carved each letter. They were made by a letter cutter. There has been a revival in the art of letter cutting in the UK in the last 20 years and a growing number of people trained as letter cutters. Happily, their work continues the tradition of fine lettered stones in our churchyards and signage.

Enduring Words

Words are carved on stone because they’re important to us. The stone makes them permanent but the craftsmanship and artistry make them precious.
