Public Artwork for Poetry Trail or Exhibition
Most of my commissions are private but I’ve also made a few stones for public installations. Words are important to people and can often express the theme of a public artwork better than something abstract. A beautiful line of text is always engaging.
Each of these commissions have a story. Its very different to work with an organization than to work with a family. Lettercutting is very solitary and it is a great pleasure to collaborate with a city council or university board on a project.
It takes a lot of courage to commission an artwork for a public artwork. Projects fail, in my opinion, when they are trivial in conception or poorly constructed. Although there are surely exceptions, its difficult to say something silly in stone!
